Franklin L. Stone papers, 1864-1909.

Franklin Stone (1812-1884) was a Vermont native, who participated in the California gold rush; farmed and taught school in the Gallatin Valley, Montana Territory; and served as Gallatin County superintendent of schools. The collection (1864-1909) includes correspondence of Stone and of his children Emma Stone Moss and Hiram J. Stone; diaries by Stone and his daughter Julia C. Stone; and writings by Stone concerning frontier life and his work as an educator. Extracts from Franklin L. Stone's diaries and letters were published in The Frontier: A Magazine of the Northwest , Vol. 12, (1931-1932), pp. 375-380. This collection consists of correspondence by F. L. Stone and his children, Emma Stone Moss and Hiram J. Stone; diaries by F.L. Stone and his daughter, Julia C. Stone; and writings by F.L. Stone reflecting frontier life and his experiences as an educator. All materials in this collection are typecript copies of the originals. Extracts from Franklin L. Stone's diaries and letters were published in The Frontier: A Magazine of the Northwest, vol. 12 (1931-1932), pp. 375-380. (Small Collection 36)

Franklin Leonard Stone was born in Vermont in 1812. He lived for several years in Illinois before moving to the Gallatin Valley of southwestern Montana, where he farmed, raised cattle, and taught school. Stone served as Gallatin County's first superintendent of schools. Sarah Barber, his wife, was a native of Illinois. Stone died near Old Gallatin, Montana, in 1884.
